A venue asked a visitor to prove that she was old enough to enter. The digital identity app displayed her full name, date of birth, home address, and document number even though the staff member needed only a yes-or-no age confirmation.

Digital identity wallets may make it easier to carry licenses, permits, travel documents, and benefit cards. Convenience should not require people to reveal an entire credential whenever one attribute is requested.

Selective disclosure allows a user to prove a limited fact, such as being over a certain age, holding a valid license, or living within an eligible district. The verifier receives the answer and confirmation that it came from a trusted source without collecting unrelated personal details.

The wallet should show exactly what will be shared before the user approves. Broad buttons such as “continue” or “verify identity” are not enough. People need to see whether the transaction reveals a name, photograph, address, unique identifier, or a simple eligibility result.

Records of verification should also be limited. A shop checking age may not need to store the person’s identity or create a history of visits. Systems should explain what the verifier retains and whether the user can later review the transaction.

Offline options and physical documents must remain available. A lost phone, dead battery, inaccessible interface, or network failure should not remove a person’s ability to identify themselves. Digital systems should expand choices rather than become the only accepted route.

Identity documents contain more information than most everyday transactions require. Selective disclosure treats privacy as part of good identification, not as an obstacle to it. A trustworthy wallet helps people prove what matters while keeping everything else under their control.

Independent security testing can verify that the wallet does not quietly transmit a complete credential while displaying only a limited result to the user.
