Thin is in, fat is in

Thin is in, fat is in:

The trouble with weight-shaming

M. M. H

There have been several commercials and advertisements about how fat women or men would be laughed at—until a slim, curvy person comes in and steals audience away. This has been referred to as fat shaming—which people claim to be a marketing technique for slimming pills and exercise regimes.

But is this really necessary? Yes, there are people who consider thin as beautiful—but there are also people who weren’t exactly born that way, their body shape and size being a genetic trait. These commercials bring shame to all those who aren’t exactly slim, everywhere.

Fat shaming isn’t the only thing condemning people to stay indoors. Thin people have also been labeled as sluts, skinny whores and sticks. Are we really not going to put an end to this?

Body shaming has never stopped, but we can do something to stop it. We can start by accepting who we really are, and not judging people based on their looks.

Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen

Born in Germany on March 27, 1845, Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen made a fascinating discovery which endowed the mankind with new technology that gave monumental impact on the medical curation of numerous people. In 1895, he discovered a new kind of ray which is now famously known as the x-ray.

In 1895, Rontgen was studying and researching the properties of cathode rays, which were the electric currents going through a gas of extremely low pressure. On one evening, when he was working with tubes, he sucked out all the air from the tube, filled it with a special gas, and passed an electric volt through it. Then, he discovered that tube would glow and found that even when he covered the tube with heavy black paper, a green colored fluorescent light in the tube could be seen from a screen that is a few meters away from the tube. This was when he first encountered the “invisible light” which was able to pass through people and objects. He named this ray as X-ray, because X in physics is used to express unknown quantity.

Rontgen found this discovery very useful to the human society. He realized that x-ray could pass through muscles and tissues of people and show the actual shape of their bones. When he took a picture of his wife’s hand with the x-ray, for instance, he was able to get the picture of the bones of her hand with a ring. Instead of installing x-ray as his own patent, Rontgen freely disseminated the technology of x-ray to all people around the world, which portrays his magnanimous and unselfish characteristics. Still now, x-rays are widely used not only in United States but also in most part of the world to cure diseases such as bone fractures and cancers.

Recognizing Rontgen’s great impact on the medical technology of human history, the Noble Prize association acclaimed his discovery and finally awarded him the Nobel Prize in Physics. We can see from his accomplishments that he certainly has more than enough qualities to receive this honor of Noble prize.

China and South China Sea Reclamations

Posted by Focus Pacific on February 23rd, 2024

C. Tingson

The neighbouring countries in Asia, Philippines and china had been rivalries for the same ownership and competitor for the same objective. It started last May 5th, when the Chinese Foreign Ministry claimed that the Philippines had this so called “malicious hyping and provocation.” This issue about the sovereignty of territory was very complex and had caused conflict between the neighbouring countries. There was an allegation from China that the Philippines, including the other nations violated the nonbinding Declaration on the conduct of Parties on the South China Sea that was signed almost thirteen years ago by ASEAN states and China.  China already claimed the possession of the South China Sea which begun in the middle of last year. They started to clear, occupy and even cemented over coral in the Spratly Island extending 4 square kilometres of land. There were many analysts who said that there is a possibility that China would use the land for their military purposes. Their worries arisen that the facilities they were building would serve as an air-defense identification zone of South China Sea.

The reclamation has been argued by some neighbouring countries of China including Taiwan and other ASEAN members like Brunei, Vietnam and Malaysia. The ASEAN meeting last month held in Kuala Lumpur which was attended by 10 ASEAN members did not come up with solid solution about the reclamation work of China and this issue remained unresolved. The organization was bothered because of the aggressive actions of china which resulted to give favour to Beijing. According to the president of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino whose an opponent of China, the Beijing’s reclamation was said to be “a threat to the freedom of global commerce and navigation.” On the other hand, the U.S.A. which is considered globally superior of freedom of navigation had never been reacted on the South China Sea controversy. Thus, made China to push through their plan of action. Singapore also took part by publicly calling New Delhi to actively respond on the region. The Prime Minister of India has quietly reacted against china and the Modi government recently issued in public the three join statements on freedom of navigation.

Way back 2006, Japan’s former foreign minister proposed an “arc of freedom and prosperity and the concept was not implemented, thinking that the regional diplomats could coordinate with China. Presently, countries are pessimistic which has a negative effect in making other nations to unite. The struggles that they have gone through clearly showed that the large body of water would drown the relationship between the two neighbouring countries of Asia.
