- The Chernobyl disaster of 1986 is the worst nuclear accident of history. The accident which happened in Ukraine (which was part of Soviet Union then) left a lot of contamination in an area of 15,000 square mile.
- The scientists who studied barn swallows in Chernobyl between 1991 and 2006 found 11 kind of abnormalities in them including distorted beaks and ill shaped feathers.
- After six months of Fukushima meltdown, as many as 28 percent of pale grass blue butterflies were found to have deformities like deformed antennae and legs and altered wing patterns.
- A study conducted on wild primates in 2012 suggested that the monkeys near Fukushima had very low RBC and WBC count as compared to monkeys anywhere else in Japan.
- Nuclear accidents don’t affect all the species. Melanized fungus has Melanin which helps in converting gamma radiation to energy. The number of spiders in the Fukushima region increased after the disaster maybe because their insect preys were slowed due to the disaster which made them an easy catch.
